The New York Lawn Bowling Club Introduce
For New Yorkers seeking a tranquil, engaging, and utterly unique sports experience away from the city's relentless pace, The New York Lawn Bowling Club (NYLBC) offers a distinguished escape right in the heart of Manhattan. Tucked into the beautiful, verdant landscape of Central Park, this club provides a dedicated space for the traditional British sport of "bowls" (often called lawn bowling). It’s a game of precision, strategy, and gentle competition that appeals to all ages and physical abilities, making it a perfect, low-impact activity for a refreshing day outdoors.
The NYLBC is more than just a sports facility; it functions as a social club that fosters a strong sense of community. The members are frequently described as 'wonderful' and 'friendly,' creating an atmosphere that is highly welcoming to both seasoned players and complete novices. This strong community element is a key factor in why many casual visitors transition into full-fledged members, drawn in by the 'fun we had playing bowls' and the overall 'great day out.' The setting itself, situated within the peaceful confines of Central Park, is unmatched, providing a beautiful, calming backdrop for the game.
The club actively promotes the sport through various means, including highly successful open days designed to introduce new members to the game. These open days are a great way for New Yorkers to learn the rules, try their hand at the sport with free equipment, and get a feel for the club's atmosphere before committing to membership. While the sport itself is accessible, some members of the community have expressed a wish for the club to increase its outreach, particularly toward children and youth, to make the activity more widely known and utilized within the public park space. While some may perceive the club as slightly 'exclusive,' its consistent efforts to welcome new members through open days speak to a desire to grow its community base.
Lawn bowling is an excellent sport for New Yorkers because it combines a challenging mental game with gentle physical activity, all within a sociable setting. It’s a perfect option for anyone looking to be active and outdoors without the high intensity of jogging or team sports. The required equipment, a set of oddly shaped balls called 'bowls' and a target ball called the 'jack,' is provided during initial visits, allowing anyone to try this hidden Central Park gem.
The New York Lawn Bowling Club is situated within one of the most iconic locations in the world: Central Park, Manhattan. The address is West Drive within, Central Park, New York, NY 10019, USA. Specifically, the lawn bowling green is located on the west side of the park, near the 70s Transverse, easily accessible from the west side of Manhattan.
Reaching the club is straightforward for New Yorkers using public transit, with the B, C, and 1 subway lines offering convenient stops within walking distance of the park's perimeter.
Being located within a public park, the area surrounding the club is generally accessible, although visitors should note that the field of play itself is a groomed grass surface. No specific information regarding dedicated wheelchair accessibility for the field of play is provided, but Central Park's main pathways are well-maintained for general access. The club's secluded, lush location offers a refreshing contrast to the concrete jungle of the city.

The New York Lawn Bowling Club Reviews
The people are friendly and the atmosphere is pretty nice. We came as a group and had a pretty good time. I just kind of wish they did more outreach to the community because its not a well known place, and I feel like they could get more involved in a variety of ways, like maybe having kids come and take part in the activities to promote them being active and outdoors. Also felt **slightly** gentrified, and a little too bougie and exclusive for a place that is in the auspices of a public park.
